Foods and Dietary Supplements for Longevity:

Food products marketed around “anti-ageing,” “cellular health,” and “longevity” are now widespread, appearing as beverages, snacks, and dietary supplements, with the category continuing to expand. Before embracing promises of “reversing ageing,” however, it is important to understand the underlying principles and scientific evidence.
The true goal is not merely a longer lifespan, but a longer healthspan—the years lived in good health, while remaining strong, mobile, mentally sharp, and able to live independently. Longevity foods should therefore aim not only to add years to life, but also to preserve the quality of those years.
Bodily Decline Occurs Across Multiple Systems Simultaneously
Ageing does not result from a single mechanism, but from cumulative changes across multiple systems. Focusing on aspects that can be influenced by diet, these include five key areas: metabolism and blood sugar, mitochondrial efficiency, chronic low-grade inflammation, the gut microbiota, and muscle and mobility. These systems are interconnected, and no single food acts alone.
Having a Good Active Compound is Not Enough
Food scientists play a crucial role in translating biological activity into real products. Efficacy demonstrated in vitro is only a starting point. An active compound must be present at a sufficient dose, be adequately bioavailable, remain stable throughout shelf life, and deliver acceptable sensory qualities. Technologies such as lipid-based delivery systems may help improve bioavailability, while stability and product quality must be maintained throughout storage.
Long-Term Consumption Demands Greater Attention to Safety
Longevity products are often consumed regularly over extended periods and may contain concentrated active compounds. Safety assessment should therefore consider appropriate dosage, long-term use, target consumers, and potential interactions with medications. The word “natural” does not always mean safe, and dietary supplements are not drugs. Health claims must also remain consistent with available scientific evidence.
