Plastic Waste Reduction in the Meat Industry with Smart Packaging Technology
The concept of using forming bags instead of trays for packaging has been implemented in combination with ‘flow wrapper’ technology for ‘flow pack’ packaging. This new packaging can be used for a variety of meat products, including ready-to-cook minced meat ingredients and meat slices in different packaging sizes and weights. As a result of this change, plastic use has been significantly reduced, with a reduction of over 70%.
The sturdy ‘flow pack’ packaging provides complete encapsulation of the product, helping to prevent contamination from germs and external sources. This type of packaging also extends the product’s shelf life, reducing the risk of spoilage both in storage and on shelves. For entrepreneurs, using ‘flow pack’ packaging reduces the number of steps required in the packaging process, resulting in decreased labor and packaging material costs, as well as lower final product packaging costs.
As highlighted in a study by the Ocean Conservancy, global plastic waste in 2016 reached a staggering 242 million metric tons, underscoring the importance of reducing plastic usage in packaging. Entrepreneurs and manufacturers must carefully select packaging technology and prioritize creating quality packaging to preserve the quality of their products, minimize waste, and reduce plastic usage. By doing so, they can help mitigate the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment.
