The global sports nutrition market is projected to reach US$138.48 billion by 2033. The growth of hybrid sports such as HYROX, which demand both endurance and power, is driving innovation beyond conventional energy drinks. Carbohydrate Synergy underpins hybrid beverages that combine carbohydrates with electrolytes, protein and functional ingredients to support energy delivery, hydration and recovery.
One key approach is Multiple Transportable Carbohydrates (MTCs), which combines glucose and fructose absorbed through different intestinal transporters, SGLT1 and GLUT5. Appropriate formulations, including 2:1 or 1:0.8 ratios, can support carbohydrate intakes of 90–120 g per hour during suitable endurance exercise. Combining carbohydrates with protein can also support glycogen replenishment and muscle recovery, while caffeine may help improve alertness and focus.
Product innovation spans isotonic carbohydrate–electrolyte drinks containing 6–8% carbohydrates, MTC energy gels fortified with ingredients such as citicoline, taurine, caffeine and L-theanine, and recovery powders combining carbohydrates, protein, creatine monohydrate and HMB. Coconut-water-based beverages offer another formulation approach, incorporating naturally occurring sugars and electrolytes.
Looking ahead, hybrid sports beverages are moving towards personalized nutrition. Continuous glucose monitoring and adjustments to carbohydrate intake based on training intensity may help tailor formulations and consumption strategies to individual needs. This creates opportunities for product developers to deliver more targeted solutions for energy, hydration and recovery.
