Knowledge check “Plastics”: What is what?
Every day, we come across a wide range of different plastics. Would you have known or been able to identify
every one of them?
PET - Polyethylene terephthalate
Whether it is used to make containers for fruits and vegetables, beverage bottles film: PET is
among the most popular materials for food packaging because it is one of the hardest plastics
but at the same time easy to mould and highly moisture-resistant.
PS - Polystyrol
Hard polystyrene is often used as packaging for dairy products and its transparent version for
making jewel CD cases, for example. In foamed form, as expanded polystyrene (EPS) or
extruded polystyrene (XPS), it possesses excellent insulation properties.
PO - Polyolefins
PP - Polypropylene
Hard-wearing allrounder: Bottle closures, reusable
containers and boil-proof films are just a few examples
that demonstrate PP’s above-average mechanical
strength, thermal stability and resistance to chemicals.
HDPE - High-density polyethylene
Whether it’s household-cleaner containers, shampoo
bottles or storage jars for food: As its name tells us, the
material possesses a high density that provides it with
excellent strength and durability and a high resistance
to chemicals, making it the ideal option for packaging
window cleaners and the like.
LDPE - Low-density polyethylene
In everyday life, you will mostly come across low-density
polyethylene in the form of a transparent film that is very
flexible and stretchable but simultaneously tear-resistant
and water-repellent and stands up well to both heat and
cold.

By 2030, Krones Recycling aims to recycle
at least 30% of the plastic it puts into
circulation. With growing markets in Asia
and Africa, demand continues to rise,
especially in India. Customers value
Krones’ high-quality, energy-efficient
systems, which reduce costs and support
sustainability. As Michael Gotsche notes,
sustainability will only succeed if it also
makes economic sense.
