ASEANTowards Industry4.0
theRoleofScience, Technologyand Innovation (STI)
The world has passed three periods of industrial
transformation from mechanization of production using
water and steampower tomassproductionwith thehelp
of electricpower followedby thedigital revolutionand the
use of electronics and information technology to further
automate production. In recent years, every country on
earth began preparing for a new industrial revolution
called “Industry4.0”; the termactually represents thenew
trend in manufacturing technologies that apply modern
communication technology to enhance the production
capacityof industry. InitiatedbyGermany2013after 230
yearssince the inventionofsteamengine in1784, Industry
4.0or the fourth revolution,will transform typical ‘industrial
products’, defined asmass-produced similar goods, into
‘mass customization’ that emphasizes specific design
withadaptability to thedemandsof individual customers.
In the fourth industrial revolution, entrepreneurs are
required to change from producers of commodities that
usuallycompetewithprice toproducinghighvalue-added
