Although Industry4.0will bringawidearray
of technologicaladvanceswith thepower to
positively impacteconomicdevelopment for
the region as ASEAN, as a community,
addresses the deficit of the technological
capacityof its labor force. It is important that
wepayattention tohowwecanensuresuch
advancescontinue tobemadeanddirected
toward the best possible outcomes. In all
technological areas, one of the biggest
impactswill likely result fromasingle force:
empowerment. Industry 4.0 will empower
governments to relate to their citizens,
enterprises to theiremployees,shareholders
and customers, or superpowers to smaller
countries. The disruption that Industry 4.0
will haveonexistingpolitical,economicand
social models will therefore require that
empowered actors recognize that they are
part of a distributed power system that
requires more collaborative forms or
interaction to succeed.
Scienceand technologyareprogressing
so fast that the limitations are now less
technical than theyare legal, regulatoryand
ethical.Newpoliciesonagricultureand food
processingpracticeswillbeenabled,which,
coupledwithsignificant advances inhealth,
agriculture, and food processing, will
ultimatelyguideus toahealthiercommunity.
In thepastdecade,wehaveseen thatakey
component inASEAN’sprogress inSTIhas
been collaboration with other nations. The
community should actively cultivate both
inter- and intra-regional collaborationwhile
emphasizing the role of STI in economic
development.
