container allows interaction with food and its surrounding environment or
headspace to inhibit microbial growth and chemical reaction and preserve
sensory properties.
3. Intelligent packaging is a package that can monitor product quality
status and immediately show the signal when the product changes to a
consumer during storage. In addition, it can show the expiration of the
product.
The vital goal of packaging development for food and beverage is to
increase efficiency in protection and preservation, especially shelf-life
extension, and reduce food spoilage. Fresh food, minimal process food,
and food without preservatives always have problems in storage conditions.
The unsuitable packaging selection and distribution may result in shorter
combination with packaging provides the
multifunction of the container and achieves
customer satisfaction. Besides, it could
potentially reduce food loss and minimizes
food rejection.
5. Label Information All food products
packages require information on the label,
for example, ingredients, nutrition facts,
usage, manufacturing, and expiry date
following the legal regulations. Packaging
also represents the product and
communicates with the consumer.
6. Convenience for logistics
The essential features of packaging are
adding convenience in logistics from
manufacturer to consumer, including
transportation, storage, and distribution.
The development of innovative
packaging has progressed in the past
several years. Currently, the food and
beverage container not only preserves the
quality or protects them from contamination
during transit but also prolongs the
product's shelf life and communicates to
the consumer. Therefore, food safety and
nutrition were improved. The application
of technology in packaging provides unique
properties and meets a proposed customer
requirement. Moreover, packaging can
promote the quality, hygiene, and safety of
food products.
Generally, food packaging can be
divided into three types according to the
level of technology.
1. Basic packaging plays a key role in
maintaining the food in a container during
the shelf life to protect it from physical
damage and enable efficient transport over
the supply chain. It provides the product
information to educate and communicate
with the consumer.
2. Active packaging can further extend
the shelf-life of the packaged food. This
