became concerned and frustrated that their fleet The HC103 halogen moisture analyzer from Mettler-Toledo
of moisture analyzers – consisting of several
different makes and models – often produced
results that did not meet their established QC
reference tolerances for moisture content. Plus, it
was difficult to manage the operation of many
different devices.
Meeting the need for consistency
With moisture content being critical to product
quality and shelf life, QC management desired a
reliable moisture check at the end of each
production line. Obtaining consistent moisture
results for each type of tea was paramount. So,
they began a search for an easy-to-operate, quick-
running halogen moisture analyzer (HMA) that
would produce results in line with the ISO-approved
reference method using the drying oven, as well
as meet the guidelines from the Food Safety and
Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Reproducible results for swift

QC requirements perfectly. Management is
particularly impressed by the halogen moisture

results, which are helping to ensure batch-to-batch
uniformity. So much that they purchased 13
new instruments, one for each of their QC
stations.
To get the best out of the instrument, the QC
managers along with instrument specialist worked
to help create the four drying methods – one for
each type of tea processed at the plant – that are
in use today to ensure that the values for moisture
content meet the company’s quality standards.
Each method was rigorously cross-referenced with
standard reference methods to ensure ongoing
accuracy and consistency.
Moisture content tests take around 8 minutes
(as opposed to 6 hours when using a drying oven);
this short processing time is providing an additional
boost to productivity by enabling a faster batch
release. With a large color touchscreen, production
workers across all shifts find the halogen moisture
analyzer is intuitively easy to use. The customized
