Proteoglycan’s activity to promote cartilage
differentiation was examined using in vitro
cartilage multi-step differentiation model with
ATDC5 cells. In this experiment, different
concentrations of proteoglycans (12.5, 25 and 50
µg/ml respectively) were analyzed. As a result, a
concentration-dependent activity to promote
differentiation was observed (Figure 1).
Proteoglycan is expected to accelerate the
regeneration of cartilage, prevent osteoarthritis,
and reduce its symptoms.
Reduction of Joint Pain
(Clinical Test)
Twelve Japanese male and female test subjects
in their forties to seventies (average age 58.8)
with mild knee joint pain who submitted their
written consent ingested proteoglycan (50 mg/
day) for twelve weeks. Then, the pain reduction
effect was evaluated using the VAS method. Oral

consumption of proteoglycan significantly reduce
the pain during walking and going up and down
stairs starting at the second week of ingestion.
Proteoglycan is expected to have an effect to
reduce joint pain (Figure 2). Oral consumption of
proteoglycan is one possible safe way to relieving
knee pain. With a small daily dosage (50 mg/day)
improves overall joint support.
Proteoglycan functionalities for joint health
include the reduction of joint pain (clinical test)
and the promotion of cartilage health, etc.
Meanwhile, it also gives some benefit to the skin
health and beauty ; for example, the promotion
of epidermal cell growth factor (EGF) in the skin,
the promotion effect on hyaluronic acid production
