Trend and Direction of Halal Food Market of Thailand
“Halal” inArabic means “permission”. In religious context, “halal” means what is allowed by religious jurisprudence
suchas thepermission toeat, thepermission todrinkand thepermission touse, etc. Therefore, theoften-heardhalal
foodmeans foods that areallowedunder Islamic dietary guidelines. It refers to foodproducts that donot containany
component that is prohibitedaccording to Islamic guidelines, or called inArabic as “haram.”
Currently, the halal food market has
gained attention because of two main
reasons. The first one is the growth of
Muslimpopulationworldwide. TheMuslim
population projection report states that
Muslim population rapidly increased from
1.6 billion people in 2010 to 2.2 billion
people in 2030

. There is high density
of Muslim population in 50 countries
contributing to USD 3 trillion of halal
business in2011.Halal foodbusinessalone
is worthUSD 700 billion with the value of
international trade totalingUSD300billion

Inaddition,halal foodmarkethasexpanded
because of the consumers’ confidence
in halal food standard. This is because
halal food has to be prepared according
to Islamic jurisprudence. Halal food is
not only free from haram but also clean,
hygienic and safe physically, biologically
and chemically.
Understand Halal according to
Thailand’s Halal Standard
Halal consists of food, non-food
and service. For food, the possibility to
contaminate a product can occur from
ingredient selection process, production
and process, transport/transfer, storage
anddistributionuntil theproduct isdelivered
to theconsumers.Meatof landanimalsand
poultry have to be slaughtered according
to Islamic law. If it is exposed to Najis or
dirt, itmut bewashedproperly. Therefore,
it is necessary to be careful in every step
of production process. If a food product
is contaminated by haram and it is not
eliminated, itwill negativelyaffect religious
belief and faith of Muslim customers.
Haram is harmful spiritually.
