Food Focus Thailand magazine has the honor to interview
Mr. Somporn Srimuang, Director of the Dairy Farming Promotion
Organization of Thailand (DPO), and learn about the story behind the
founding of DPO, a Thai state enterprise under the oversight of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The organization’s mission is
to pass on dairy farming-related technological know-how to and purchase
raw milk from dairy farmers to support their businesses and increase
their revenues. In the past 62 years since its inception, DPO has
continuously been making improvements in the production of raw milk
in terms of both quality and quantity by encouraging dairy farmers to
increase the proportion of dairy cattle breeds in their farms and
establishing a commercial dairy demonstration farm featuring a
smart-farm system that helps reduce environmental impact. In general,
a milk cow in this model farm can yield as much as 20 kilograms of milk
per day, an average that is higher than that of other normal farms, which
usually produce 12 kilograms per day per cow. Consequently, the costs
of raw milk can be better controlled and capped at no higher than THB
15 per kilogram. In addition, a feed center has also been established
to give farmers better access to high-quality feeds. Roughages and
concentrates are proportionally mixed to create a new feed formula of
total mixed ration (TMR), which provides more balanced nutrients to
