Keeping an Eye on the Thai Livestock Products
Market
Asaconsequenceof theavianflucrisis inSouthKorea, Thailandhas
beenable toboost eggandeggproducts export toSouthKorea. The first
shipmentof freshchickeneggs toSingaporewassentonApril 6,2017and
was worth about THB 970,000; and the first pasteurized egg export to
SouthKoreaonApril 11, 2017was valuedat THB800,000.
The production of chickenmeat inThailand from 2012 through 2016
grew at an average of 6.8 percent per year. In 2016, Thailand produced
1.55 billion broiler chickens, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the
previous year, and production is expected to further increase in 2017.
Export volume of chicken meat products is expected to increase of 3.8
percent and reach800,000 tons, with Japan remaining themajormarket.
Exports toSouthKoreaandSingaporearealso likely to increaseafterboth
countries againare allowing the import of frozen chicken fromThailand.
Thailandhasa total of 191,289pig farmers, 98.7percent ofwhomare
small farmers with only 0.1 percent of pig raising operations considered
as large-scale with more than 5,000 pigs. Thailand has 5,801
slaughterhouses and pork processing plants, with only eight of these
meeting export standards. 26 pork processing plants have been certified
asmeeting Japanese standards.
In 2016, total Thai pork exports amounted to 14,600 tons, valued at
THB2.4billion,which representeda15.1percentdecrease involume from
the previous year. Exports of chilled/frozen pork amounted to 5,043 tons
valued at THB 253 million, an increase of 18.4 percent, mainly due to
exports to CLMV countries. The export of processed pork products
amounted to 12,942 tons valued at THB 2.143 billion, shrinking by 26.2
percent as the exports to Japan and the Netherlands declined sharply,
which is themain reason that theoverall exportsofThai porkdeclinedYoY.
In theyear2017, theOfficeofAgriculturalEconomicsexpectsdomestic
demand for pork will increase by 2.16 percent from the previous year to
