anthocyanins which are considered to be strong
antioxidants and have been shown to impact
overall health. Anthocyanin has been six principal
                types are delphinidin, cyanidin, pelargonidin,
peonidin, petunidin and malvidin. A specific
category of anthocyanins in maqui berry known as
delphinidins are responsible for their color. Today,
next to goji or acai, maqui berries are viewed as
real “super fruit” due to its superior antioxidant
properties with a unique phytochemical profile.
                Antioxidant Potency
                Among maqui berry anthocyanins, especially
delphinidin and cyanidin species can be found.
                Miranda-Rottman and colleagues (2002) assessed
the phenolic content in different berry juices
                (blackberry, blueberry, cranberry, raspberry,
strawberry, maqui berry and red wine) via the Total
                Radical-Trapping Potential (TRAP). This measure
enables to determine the amount of free radicals
that can be trapped by the sample, hence providing
the total antioxidants present . Figure 1 represents
                                     (1)
the TRAP values and total polyphenol content
obtained for each berry, maqui berry juice bears a
threefold higher polyphenol content in comparison
with the other berry juice tested.
                High Antioxidant Profile
The richest natural source of delphinidin is Maqui
berry. Maqui berry commercial extract to yield 25%
total delphinidin and 35% total anthocyanins to
enhance the delphinidin content in maqui berry
                test by Brunswick Laboratories (Southborough,
Massachusetts, USA, 2013). They showed a
ORAC 5.0 value of 30852 µmol trolox equivalent
per gram. Maqui berry extract demonstrated the
ability to neutralize peroxyl-, hydroxyl-, superoxide
anion- and peroxinitrite-radicals, as well as singlet
oxygen that represents the richest natural dietary
                source of antioxidant.

                Bioavailability
With special regard to anthocyanins, it is known
that after ingestion anthocyanins can be absorbed
by both the stomach as well as by the intestine .
                                                   (3)
                Thus, bioavailability studies described that
anthocyanins can be detected rapidly in the
circulatory system and in several tissues . Include
