Artisticandsophisticated:origami is theskillof foldingasimplesheetofpaper intoaveritableworkofart–and themultidimensional
objects created by this Japanese mode of dexterity are authentic eye-catchers. However, origami embodies not only art, but
scienceaswell. Because ingenious folding creates stable structures out of a thin sheet of paper. Theseobjects react differently
toexternal stresses, inparticular,dependingon thebasicstructure involved:whereassome folding techniques render thesurface
more stable, others enhance its flexibility.
Creating a container that combines a stable shape with a striking
visual design– this is thedaily challenge facedby the container design
experts. Ina students’ researchproject conducted in conjunctionwitha
privatecompany, the ideabehindorigami was transferred frompaper to
plastic. The same folding principle is then tasked with creating PET
containers thatcanbeproduced inastretchblow-mouldingprocess.The
result isan intelligentpouch1 -asqueezecontainerbasedon theprinciple
of origami.
The design study’s innovative container concept is in purely visual
terms reminiscent of an accordion – and utilises the latter’s folding
principle: this enables the contents to be dosed neatly. The container
canbeeffectivelycompressedandemptiedcompletely.Specifically, the
an intelligent pouch1 concept could be ideally suited for highly viscous
foods,suchassaucesand toppings,of thekindsused incateringoutlets,
snack bars, and at large-scaleevents.
The shape and handling of this intelligent pouch1create numerous
advantages. Inconventional saucedispensers, forexample, theproduct
is mostly propelled by elaborate pump mechanisms. The individual
componentsof thesepumpsarecontinuously incontactwith thecontents,
are not at all easy to clean, and for reasons of hygiene have to be
disinfected at least every 14 days.
With this intelligentpouch1,bycontrast, theuserpresses theproduct
out of thecontainer byhand.Sowhen it’sbeingdosed thesaucecomes
into contact onlywith the package, and a pump-based dispenser is not
requiredatall.The ingenious foldingprincipleensures that thecontainer
isemptiedalmostcompletely. Itcan thenbe recycledveryeasily, together
with its lid, and replacedbyanewone. This complete replacement also
means that it is no longer necessary toperform time-intensive cleaning
ofallcomponents thathadpreviouslycome intocontactwith thepreceding
product. If thecontainer isnotemptiedcompletely, itcanbesealedagain
at any time and placed in a fridge, for example.
On thepath from thestudy tofinalmarketmaturity, thereareseveral
stages of development still to be tackled before this intelligent pouch1
canbe successfully launched.
