Germanyprocessed59.3millionpigsandproduced5.57millionmetric
tonnesof pork,making it the thirdbiggest porkmeat producerworldwide
behindChina and theUSAand the biggest in theEuropeanUnion. The
export quotaof Germanpork ismore than50percent. Its biggest export
market isChina.
Germany also processed 3.6million cows and produced 1.1million
metric tonnes of beef,making it the secondbiggest beef producer in the
EuropeanUnion.Mainexportmarkets forGermanbeefaremostly located
within theEuropeanUnion.
Thanks to their highquality, theGermanmeat andmeat productsare
ingreat demandall over theworldandarebeingexported to roundabout
120 countries on earth.
• DairyProducts
Withaproductionofnearly32.8million tonnesof cowmilk (2016)and
a turnover of 22.6 billion Euro, Germany is Europe’s largest cow milk
producer by far. The cowmilk export quotaof theGermandairy industry
isalmost50percent.4.3millionmilkcows,71,302milkproducers,35,158
workersat148Germanmilkprocessingcompanieshelpmake theGerman
dairy industry the country’s second most important food and beverage
sector in terms of turnover.
With an export value of almost 577million Euro, Asia is now by far
the most important non-European export region for the German dairy
industrywithabiggermarket share thanall other non-Europeanmarkets
combined (548millionEuro).
Dairy products significantly influence the lifestyle and nutritional
patterns of German people. The average German consumes 105.3
kilogramsof dairyproductsper year, including54 kilogramsofmilk, 24.5
kilograms of cheese, 17 kilograms of yoghurt, and6.0 kilograms butter.
• Cereals andBread
Thecerealproduction inGermany ismodern,centralisedandefficient.
Only 214mills with an output of at least 1,000 tonnes per year mill 8.3
million tons of wheat and rye. Amill in Germany is serving more than
385,000peopleper day onaverageandanaverageGerman consumes
70 kg of cereal products a year.
Germany iswell known for its breadandbakery products. Until now,
3,176differentkindsofbreadhavebeendocumented in theofficialGerman
bread register and there are considerations to apply for the status of
UNESCO immaterial cultural heritage for German bakery crafts.
275,200 bakers work in the early hours in 12,155 companies with
about 35,000 branches and generate a turnover of 13.99 billion Euro.
German bakers invest 500 million Euro per year into their machinery,
vehicle fleet and and equipment. The average annual household
consumption of bread inGermany is 47.2 kilogram.
• Confectionery
Sugar in Germany is mainly derived from beet roots. 29,508 sugar
producing farms deliver to 20German sugar refining facilities belonging
toonly4companieswitha turnoverof3.05billionEuro.Only10.8percent
of theGerman sugar is sold to the private consumer, while 89.2 percent
is used - among others - in the confectionery industry.
The approximately 50,000 employees of the highly innovative
confectionery industryproduceover4million tonnesof confectioneryand
generatean inlandproductionofmore than12.28billionEuro.Theexport
share stands at 50percent of production volume - or 2.05million tonnes
- and65 percent of production value - or 7.99 billionEuro.
Chocolate confectionery is the most important product and export
category both in volume and value.
An average German consumes 32.71 kilograms of confectionery a
year,mostlychocolateandchocolateconfectionery (about9.74kilograms),
biscuits and sugar confectionery.
• Beer
TheGerman beer purity law from 1516 is the oldest food quality law
in theworld that isstill valid today.Thismeans that todayonly4 ingredients
canbeused for beer:malt, hops, yeast andwater.The legacyof this
law is the proverbial purity and quality of German beer appreciated
worldwide.
Germany is by far the biggest beer producing country in the
EuropeanUnion. 26,881 employees in 1,388mostlymedium-sized
Germanbreweriesproduce95.7millionhectolitresof 6,000different
kinds of beer and export 16.6 percent or 15.853million hectolitres
(estimate), more than twice the volumeof beer imports.
Germans are the secondmost “passionate” beer drinkers in the
worldwith107 litres annual per-capita consumptionafter theCzech
with 143 litres (2014).
• Wine
Winehasbeen cultivated inGermany sinceRoman times2,000
yearsago.Thereare13wineproducing regions inGermanygrowing
almost140differentvarietiesofgrapes.Germanyproduces64percent
white wine and 36 percent red wine. Germans drink 20.5 litres of
wineper person per year.
Manyof the43,380viticulturalenterpriseshavehundredsofyears
of tradition while producing with up-to-date know-how and cutting-
edge technology.

is enjoying growing popularity inAsia as it fits the local cuisine and
palate. Germany is thebiggest Riesling producer worldwide.

beverages fromGermany (hereafter: food) toThailand. In2016, the
total foodexport increased8.8percent from136 to148millionEuro,
causedmostly by exports of foodof animal and plant origin.
