Investment Sector:
Myanmar has reenacted into a
new investment law (Foreign Investment Law: FIL). It is
expected to have more deregulation to open to foreign
investment for economic development of the country.
Tourism Sector:
Changes in Myanmar attract more
international travelers to the country, both for business
and tourism purposes. During the first 2 months of 2012
there were 98,486 people traveling to Myanmar. These
represent the number of travelers to Myanmar of about
1,500 people per day on average.
Economic Trends in 2013
With the progress of reform, easing of sanctions against
Myanmar as well as the economic and financial policy
including domestic investments are factors advocating
for and attract foreign investors who are interested to
invest more in the country. While she urges development
of the country to step up to the AEC scheme in 2015, this
is driving the economy of Myanmar as well. Kasikorn Research Center
expects that the economy of Myanmar will grow at least 6.0 percent in
fiscal year 2012 (April 212 to March 2013).
Kasikorn Research Center forecasts for the direction in fiscal 2013
that the outlook for economic growth in Myanmar is likely to maintain her
continuous growth. The core driving force will be the continued expansion
of the foreign investment in the country. The field that has the potential
to attract major investments remains in the energy sector, including oil,
natural gas and hydro electricity dams. It also includes infrastructure for
the development needs to support the economic growth including tourism
and related services. They are other businesses that have grown from
this period.
Economic Issues
Myanmar’s political reforms entail changing her economic role due to
the relaxed sanctions. As a result, many countries renew and boost
economic relations, trade and investment with Myanmar to have much
more intimacy. For example, the United States relaxes restrictions on
the U.S. businesses investing in certain sectors in Myanmar. Similarly,
the Japanese government is prepared to negotiate an investment treaty
with Myanmar. India is aiming to expand bilateral trade with Myanmar to
two folds by 2015. Such movements are signs that Myanmar will move
forward in the attractive economic roles.
However, political stability and the economic policies of Myanmar
are also issues that need to be tracked due to the political reform and
improvement in the economic and investment policies. This may require
a period of adaptation and settling of regulations that are reasonable and
consistent with the whole of the country.
Myanmar has recently upgraded to a managed floating exchange
rate that makes the stability of the money which may need time to adapt.
Yet the deployment of managed floating exchange rate system will allow
the exchange rate to stabilize through the financial system in the country.
This will further strengthen the competitiveness of trade and investment in
Myanmar. Moreover, Myanmar is still in progress to improve the payment
system into the international standards. This should help build confidence
in the financial system and economic growth in the later period.
